Nut won't sit flush...

Discussion in 'Luthier's Corner' started by Bassguitarbubba, Sep 17, 2008.

  1. I'm putting a new nut into a new finished J-neck. There seems to be a high spot in the nut slot so the nut will not seat flush in the slot. I tried to lightly sand the slot in an effort to lower the high spot, but the nut is still not seated properly. The nut still has plenty of material on it so I can sand it more if needed. My question is...should I continue to sand the high spot in the nut slot until the nut seats properly? It's only high on the E string side.

  2. It looks like the nut slot is too rounded on either side... Is that what you're talking about? Yeah, I'd keep sanding, but only a little bit at a time. Go slow.

  3. It's rounded too. But there was a high spot about under the the A string. I could see it and it looked like it was a drop of finish that dried there.

  4. In that case, I'd file away. But do check the string height every so often so you don't go too far.
