    New vintage bass day!

Just took delivery of my latest bass a couple days ago. A 1978 Musicman Stingray that I got in trade from Moore.jcm.

So that brings my vintage Musicman total up to three.

    As pictured here, they are

    • '78 Stingray
    • '79 Sabre
    • '80 Sabre

Those Sabres are nice, I'm particularly fond of the burst one.

Wow, I'm guessing that is one of the Alembics.

Still, that's pure Louis Johnson goodness you just got:

  7. Wow. I've been hankerin' for a nice, vintage Sabre. And, the natural one you have has got my attention. What material is that p/guard called? Is that their version of a tort 'guard? There's no red in it like Fender's.

I ordered the pickguard from Pickguard Heaven. It's called Amber Burst or something like that. Thinking of ordering a tort for the sunburst.

How was the preamp different on the album cover? Seems like some knobs are missing; different preamp?

Nothing different. Knobs were off for basic maintenance. In my experience there is N-E-V-E-R a reason to swap out an Alembic preamp. If you want a different preamp, you want a different bass. Replace a defective pre with a new pre of same type, sure, but swap? Naw...

BTW....not an album cover....cover of a magazine article detailing a lot of Stanley's gear.

    .....annnnnnd back to the Stingray......

I played around with it at a short rehearsal and my son played it last night at our choir rehearsal. Very solid instrument. Expected tone. A little bit of buzz at Eb on the D string (fret 1) but easily manageable with technique. When I setup with new strings I can probably knock that right out. No idea what strings are omit or how old they are,but I will likely string it with DR Black Beauties like the two Sabres or DR Marcus Miller Fat Beams like my Marchlewski 5-string.

  14. What a nice little family you have there.

Looks like holes, not missing knobs, unless the knobs were pulled off and the pots pushed into the body. Is that right? Seems strange.

My guess is that the entire backplate is off, and therefore no shafts for the knobs to rest on. At, of course, raises the question of "how are the two knobs that are on still hanging on?". I'll have to look at that when I get home. Those are the controls for frequency boost for each pickup. Could be on a separate card in the cavity. I haven't had the back open for a while.

Thanks. With these three and my other three basses I think I'm done. But then that's what I said before the Stingray became available. Just occurred to me.....these are the last 3 instruments I have acquired. Before the Stingray, I bought the sunburst Sabre in late 2010 or early 2011. My other three basses were purchased in 2000 and 2004.
