Hi fellow TBers, I recently bought a M5-24 and am really not liking the lack of mid controls and boost only of the sadowsky preamp. Has anyone updated their bass with something else which they found to be better? I'm happy with the pickups just not the preamp. Ive been looking at a GlockenKlang OB 3 and a Audere Classic 4 Band but have not had the chance to hear them. Has anyone tried these? and are they any good? Is there something else I should check out? Any advice or recomendations would be greatly appricated. Cheers.
John East is a popular choice around here, haven't tried it before. I like both my Bartolini NTMB and Aguilar OBP-3. They both have mid controls.
I would look at the Nordstrand 3 band with cut and boost. If you can live without the cut, Sadowsky does now offer the mid boost preamp for an upcharge. Call the shop and ask if they can retrofit your bass.
Ive been looking a the John East Uni-Pre, sounds great on demo videos but he has not replied to my emails.
Yeah I need both bost and cut. So will check out the Nord. I live a long way away from NYC so I don't think the mid boost is for me. Thanks for the info tho.
Ive been tossing up between Nordstrand, Barts and John East. Ive finally pulled the trigger on a John East Uni Pre. Will update the post with a review once it arrives and is installed.
Just got my M5-24 back from the shop with the John East Uni-Pre installed. All went well and it fitted with no issues. Got to say the preamp rocks! I found the orignal preamp was too scooped and the bass boost a bit muddy but the uni-pre has adustable freq for bass and treble. Also I feel modern basses have to have mids and with the mid boost and variable mid freq this preamp provides heaps. If you are like me and found the Sad preamp in your M5-24 a bit 1 dimensional, I highly recommend the East Uni-Pre. It has totally transformed my bass and opened up a whole new world of tonal possiblities. Awesome!
