Obscure bass - Linc Luthier

  1. Has anyone out there had any experience with these basses? I'd like to hear any comments, since it's my latest G.A.S. (pass the tums)

He has some interesting ideas, and a shape that probably won't appeal to the masses, but they sure are pretty!

There's actually a Linc Luthier dealer here in Omaha (imagine that!) and I've played one or two of them briefly. The shape's not really my thing, but they used some beautiful woods and seemed very well made. The semi-hollow body was not really all that "acoustic" sounding, but the ones I saw had fairly heavy lacquer finishes. His approach to neck construction was pretty unique, though I've seen others use horizontal laminations more recently.

I've played a few, but not recently.

Like Mike said, the body is something you either like, or you don't. It'll certainly never be accused of being derivative of anything else.

The necks I played were the most drastically V shaped necks I've ever played. It worked great as a 4 string, but I've not played anything with more than 4.

Mike also mentioned the finish--it is, indeed, very thick.

Nice basses, but not really my thing. If you like them, they are certainly well made.
