  1. Okay, I've always loved this Deep Purple tune and never knew Joe South wrote it and recorded it first. Please post some pairs of tunes you like in which you think the original (obscure) version is at least as good as the later cover version.

  2. Another Joe South penned tune, I knew you when, the original version was by Billy Joe Royal and Linda Ronstadt covered it, I've always though Billy Joe Royals version blew hers away. Actually there are a lot of Linda Ronstadt covers in which I think the originals were better now that I think of it.

  3. And one of my all time favorites The Everly Brothers' When Will I be Loved written by Phil Everly, first by Linda Ronstadt again and then the brothers themselves:

  4. For me, one of the most obvious is "California Girls", of which the David Lee Roth version went to #2 in the U.S.

  7. Well not obscure but the Kinks original version:

    Cover version Van Halen:

The Kinks version blows away the Van Halen version IMHO.

  16. That David Lee Roth was always doing covers!
I liked the original Nashville Teens cover of "Tobacco Road" but Roth did a decent one.

More Roy Orbison, though released posthumously as I understand. And bonus is the very cool Moto Guzzi in the video. :)
