Saw this picture on Instagram with the caption "J.C. Penney’s electronics department , 1968." Curious as to what this bass is!

Nice! How did it sound, like a Jbass or like a Rick? Or perhaps like a Pbass, given that yours only had one pickup?

Edit: Just checked the Kay catalogue, they offered quite an assortment of instruments and amps! Admittedly I was not aware of this brand, are they still around?

Too long ago to say exactly how it sounded, but as you can see I actually played it often in real-life situations rather than simply hanging it on a wall as an oddball.
Remember it had a lot of unique midrange character, slightly gritty, not too thick with bottom, slightly lower-output than my others basses at the time, Fender Precisions and G&L L-1000.

Kay, along with Harmony and some other marques, was a casualty of the Great Guitar Bust of the late 1960s. For a very brief time they joined with Valco to create the Kuston Craft Moderne line of instruments, then went under completely. Shortly thereafter the name was purchased by the Japanese, who marketed a Kay Precision Bass in the JC Penney catalog. But @Lowbrow 's generation of Kay has been gone a long time.
