"Official" Carvin and Kiesel Club - Part 3

I'm in! First post even! That NEVER happens... Usually I'm about 100posts late to the party! lol

This is my first ever Carvin, Onyx. Is it good or bad that I'm already planning my next build, and this one is only about four weeks old?

It's a LM Strap that I picked up from Dan at Premier Bass Guitars, near Boulder CO. Bought it before I even got my SB... Saw it in the shop and KNEW I had to have it!

I'm really jonesin' for a new build...swamp ash body w/quilted maple top, 5 piece maple asymmetrical neck w/birdseye maple fretboard, HH pickup setup and finished with translucent sapphire blue paint . Should be a slap MONSTER!

 

Howdy all! My Carvin stable is currently only two strong, but they're cherries.

First, this fantastic AC40F says "Dream Songs" on the truss cover. I believe I'm at least the 5th owner of this bass, but I'm here to tell ya, it's not going anywhere. Not sure which of the previous owners took these pro pictures, but, hot damn.







And here's my newest baby, 'Ole Spalty herself. I swear I went to bed every night for two months thinking about spalted maple before I ordered. Icon headstock, five piece neck, black hardware, and a custom smoky-clear pickguard round out this SB5000.





Next up, I'll probably get one of the new PB4s when they become available in kit form. I've also been gassing for a Bromberg B24P. We'll see what the rest of the year holds.

I have a question about the Walnut.
In some pics I see the walnut is nice and dark and in some it's lighter.
In this first page we have both.
Is it the finish, or lack thereof? Is it the way people take the pics?
For those who have them, which pics represent the real dark/light tone?

 

walnut will vary in color, just as a lot of other woods do.

 

OK. So let me ask some more specific questions.

Bassist4Eris, what finish on your walnut body?

JAZZ41, what finish on yours?

Also, does anybody have any pics and/or experience with TrueOil on walnut?
This what I currently plan to put on my PB5 kit once they offer them, but if someone jumps in and yells Nnnoooo! then I'll rethink that.

 

I have tung oil on mine. I used four or five coats on that bass. I used tung oil again on another walnut jazz bass I'm building. I would have used Truoil but I still had a decent amount of tung left

Tung oil is very easy to use and I think it feels great you can build it up pretty thick too. I have a mahogany SG bass i built that has a thick coat of about 6-7 layers of tung. Feels great

The thing I like about TrueOil is it tends to darken the wood and make the grain pop. It's also really easy to work with. But it also give a hard coating, although not quite as hard as a clear coat lacquer or epoxy.
I've done 3 fretboards with TrueOil and I've been really happy with it.
