When I was in college (majoring in jazz and studio music on electric bass, when that was a REALLY NEW THING), I was assigned to transcribe solos. I did this using the only tool I had for the job, a BSR turntable that had a 16 rpm setting. For some reason, I never did develop much of a taste for transcription! Now, however, I have downloaded an app (called the Amazing Slow Downer) for my Android tablet, and download tunes from the web to transcribe any little snippet I want to from them. It's a bit of a struggle sometimes, but from a technical standpoint, it's hard to imagine how it could be made much easier. I just finished transcribing and memorizing two choruses of Wynton Kelly soloing on Miles Davis's Freddie the Freeloader. I don't have much of a question on this thread, but I wouldn't mind hearing from folks who have been doing a lot of transcribing of jazz solos that AREN'T on the bass, to benefit from your experiences.
