old Ampeg V4B head needs help

Discussion in 'Amps and Cabs [BG]' started by Wounded Paw, Jun 21, 2002.

  1. I have an old Ampeg V4B tube bass head that needs some careful repair work. When it's working it sounds great but then every so often something will start shorting and it blows one fuse after another usually as soon as I power it on. It's been in for repairs at a local shop several times but because the problem is intermittent it's hard to track down. Anyone have any ideas or possibly an expert on this amp anywhere near Toronto (Canada). I use a vintage SVT for playing live but this V4B would be perfect for our recording studio.

Likely as not It'll be the power supply filter caps if its the main (power) fuse blowing.
If it's the HT fuse it could be a faulty tube.
  3. No HT fuse on Ampeg V4B.

  4. I'll have to take another look at it, it's at our practice space. If it's a faulty winding why does it only go intermittently?
Will I be able to find the same parts for replacement?

And yes it's only got the one fuse.
