I've been working on a friend's 80s Boss CE-2 chorus because he said the LED stopped working on it. Pedal effect works fine, the LED just won't light up when it's engaged. I swapped the LED and the power jack based on an old TB thread discussing a similar issue, still doesn't work. Come to find out, this is very common on older Boss pedals: they work fine on 9v battery or daisy chaining but need more than a standard 9v power supply when using isolated power. Sure enough, everything works great on the CE-2 when I use a battery, and this problem definitely seems to coincide with my friend moving away from a daisy chain and to a Pedal Power unit.

Understanding the issue, I'm wondering if I can hack the pedal somehow so that the LED will light up when powered by the PP2+ unit. Could I change the resistor value to allow enough current to the LED? Can I wire around the old circuit completely? The Boss board and buffered circuit is more complex than the kits I've built, so any help from resident tinkerers/builders would be appreciated.

  2. Can't he just switch one of the PP+ outlets to 12V? I would think that would solve the problem. Not to take away from your overall query.

Yeah, I might get him to try that when I return the pedal. I mentioned it before, and I think he's nervous about giving the extra push since it's a vintage pedal, but everything I've read says it's fine.

  4. Yeah. The Boss ACA power supplies are 12V, so that's what that pedal is looking for.
