Old Peavey 1x15 cab with Altec 421A, used to be great, not with new bass?

  1. Ok gents, here's my trouble:

Years ago I scored an old Peavey 1x15 Thiel cab (the one with the shelf port at the bottom) and it had an Altec 421A in it. I've always played old tube amps, and this cab worked great for years. I've been using it with a homemade 80 Watt tube head for the last few years with a Jazz Bass, and it always was fine for bar gigs, not the greatest low bass, but I was heard, and the tone was awesome when I put the amp into some overdrive to keep up with 3 guitarists and drums.

Well, last weekend my wife gave me a Fender Telecaster Bass Modern Player with the 2 Mudbucker pickups. Now my signal coming out of my bass is like a true octave lower, and it seems the old Peavey cab and 421A don't reproduce it accurately or give enough volume like the Jazz bass did with the same setup.

So what's an old tube idiot to do? I've got a V4B head and cab, but the small places we play don't really have room for them. Can I shove an old Peavey Black Widow in the Peavey 1x15 and get the lows I think my bass is giving, and also get the loudness? Should I drag out my giant sealed-cab 1x18 Black Widow and pump up the treble to deal with the lower volume? I'm kinda stumped. I really want to keep my 80 Watt homemade tube amp in the mix, and keep a small footprint, but have an old-school mid-bass thud going on.

    Thanks,
    Chris

  2. I had one of those cabs. HP took the call and said he built it in his garage in Meridian. All seat-of-the-pants engineering. Mine sounded great with an EVM15L as a more efficient, higher power handling replacement for the stocker (I played a redface SWR Bass 350 through it). You may as well give that BW a shot.
