Old songs and fadeouts

Discussion in 'Recordings [BG]' started by rabid_granny, Jun 20, 2003.

  1. Does anyone know why so many old pop tunes (ie. Motown) from the 1950's and 1960's fade out instead of ending like a live performance?

My guess is that they couldn't think of a dynamic ending. I've always thought the fade-out was a boring thing to do, and it bothers me when bands do it these days (Portishead in particular).

Edit: I also think they would've done the fade-outs live if it wasn't so awkward for everyone to start turning down amps and playing softer towards the end of the song. Now, the PA could just be turned down, but, fade-outs are less common (thank goodness).
