Hey folks. What is the output like on the OLP stock pick-ups? Are they hot, i.e. are they high output? I'm looking at a Tony Levin Signature 5 and am curious.

There are still a bunch floating around on eBay stores, but I wouldn't buy through one of those unless they had a great return policy and I knew someone with experience buying from them. I've heard that the build quality can be inconsistent, but that if you get a well made one they are a great bass for the money. There is one that I've had my eye on for a while and I hope it's still available when I go to buy it in a couple of weeks. It is at a dealer that I've purchased a ton of gear from and I trust them. So if they say it's crap...it's crap. If not, I'm nabbin' it.

Anyway, I've never heard great things about the electronics, but I was just wondering if the stock electronics are high output.

Thanks bassmanslap. I'd be interested if you could compare the output to other basses you own or have played in the past...

hi, i have one of these and yes, the output is pretty high. my other basses are passive so it's not really a controlled comparison but, for example, it's at least one third again as loud as my (MIM, 50s RI) p-bass, maybe more. :)

  8. i just received a slightly used mm22 and it seems the same as the stingray hh i owned for a short while. dare i say this, but i'm shocked at how close the olp mm22 is to the eb/mm hh. obviously, the clear finished ash my eb/mm had was beautiful and i really dug the compensated nut and setup. but, after a new set of strings and a good setup, i think folks would be hard pressed to pick the difference in a blind test. i wasn't crazy about the electronics of the eb, and i'm not crazy about the olp either, but they are very, very similar if any difference at all. not that either are bad, they're versatile, they just don't have the "character" i associate with the original stingray sound. the relationship is very much like the usa vs skyline laklands i've owned. i just can't see owning a really expensive bass anymore when the cheaper alternatives are so darn close.

if you like the newer eb stingray sound, you may want to give the stock olp mm22/32 a good try before you change the pups and electronics...

    hope this helps,

  9. I agree with you I just recently bought an OLP mm 22 4 and I was blown away by the versatily of this bass. I have a stingray a sterling and a stingray 5 as well as a Sterling fretless with piezo. As far as sound goes its Ernie Ball all the way I am seriously thinking of upgrading the pups with basslines. The first time I brought the bass to practice with the guys they all thought I had bought another EB, they were shocked that it was an OLP. I forgot to mention that this is a bass with active electronics and is high output compared to a passive bass, by the way they have a mm 22 5 string available go for that forget about the tony levine. I tried the five string and it's just as good as the Eb hh 5.

I have a Passive OLP MM 5 String, the output on it is generally louder than some of my Active basses, and a lot louder than my passive ones!

Well, I'm going for the Levin. I have other two pickup basses and really want the Levin. Call me crazy. Planning on eventually upgrading the electronics, but maybe not...We'll see how she sounds first. I just wanted to get feedback on the output before taking the plunge...

    Graphite Pearl. Arrived today!! :hyper:

The tone is amazing, the finish is superb (pics on the net do it no justice at all!) I might change the pickups out at some point, but im in no hurry.

I have been loyal to my jackson for years but this bass absolutely wipes the floor with it! I played on a MM stinger in my local music shop a few weeks ago, and to be quite honest with you, pretty much the same feel and sound! Glad i didnt go ahead and pay £1000 for the real deal (although i will do at some point :0) )

Right i'm off for a jam. :bassist:

I just wish they did a matching headstock with that finish. The plain headstock drives me crazy!

Oh and thanks for getting back to us on that...
