I'm going on vacation, the bass stays behind!!! Like usual, I take my violin with me, not that the two instruments are interchangeable, but it keeps me busy with music and producing notes with a bow on a string. Incidently I just found this nice book by Pierre Blanchard (in French, sorry), which deals specifically with issues associated with fiddle and jazz, notably two notes accompaniment on the violin. AFAIK (but maybe you know better), this is a fairly original and interesting approach since, as a melodic instrument, the fiddle is usually retricted to melody and solo parts. However that book consider that part of the fun in jazz is to support and accompany other players. Actually I remember that Howard Armstrong used to do that all the time, it was a real pleasure to play with him cause he would accompany you even when he used the fiddle, not just on mandolin. Anyhow, it's a neat book and it comes on vacation with me.
