This may be a bit unorthodox, but is it possible to have a mid pot on my bass without having to resort to active pickups?

    thanks!

Yes, but you will have to have an active preamp...

There are such things as passive filters, though, that work on a certain bandwidth. But the problem with this kind of system is that id depends greatly on the impedance of the circuit around it. So, a buffer on either side would be adviseable. But then you are going back to some sort of active circuitry.

or you could get villex pickups, which are passive AND have a mid control.

You could just use normal pickups with active EQ circuitry.
