4 string. I like playing open E but it sounds so much more trebly than all the others strings. It's annoying. I have taken to muting it with my left index finger near the nut when plucking it. E when fretted is fine. Strings are Ernie Ball 45-105 rounds. Should I consider foam near the bridge? I don't want to dampen the rest of the instrument just because of the one note.

Get new strings. The E may have become unwound.

Good call. I have another set.

Try a lighter gauge. Or make sure the action is set correct. It might be due to E-String hitting against the frets. Had that happen on my bass.
