Opinion of Bill Lawrence J pickups?

Discussion in 'Pickups & Electronics [BG]' started by funkdaddy, Jun 14, 2002.

  1. If anyone has firsthand knowledge of Bill Lawrence Jazz bass pickups (also known as "J-45"), I would appreciate any opinions you could offer. I'm looking for adjectives to describe their overall character (vintage, warm, modern, bright or whatever). I'm particularly interested in these pickups since they are humcancelling, as well as the fact that they're relatively inexpensive ($48.00 each).

Also, if anyone has used these pickups in combination with the John East J-Retro preamp, I'd love to hear opinions of this as well.

    Thanks in advance!

I haven't used these pickups yet, but I am planning to use them in a Warmoth project. I have been looking around for info on them too. You can find some good info on them at http://pub41.ezboard.com/bthedudepit. There is a guy there using them with a J-Retro pre. Also http://pub123.ezboard.com/fguitarsbyfenderfrm8 has some info. The description I am getting from theses sites is clear, piano-like, rull range, balanced, very low noise. As for price, they don't advertise much, and you are buying direct, so the prices are very low.

  3. I understand there is a 4 week waiting period, so plan accordingly and get your orders in early.
