Is there a device like a caliper that works externally (optically) to measure small distances? I need something with an LED or a laser beam that I can shine into a piece of machinery and measure a small interval, let's say a range of 100 microns to 1 cm. Is there any such device?

    Try this website:

    www.laser-ndt.com

Maybe way more high-tech than you were looking for, but it might get you going in the right direction.

I got an optical laser tapemeasure from Home
Depot last fall and found it to be useless.
The accuracy was only to 1"
Uggghhh! Returned that pronto, was only good for
    job estimation.

I don't think there is much to find here but
keep in mind that if the hole is straight, most
mechanical calipers have a center slide
    specifically designed for inside measurement.

I have both dial calipers and regular calipers
with this feature, I also have a caliper I got
from my Dad specifically for inside hole
measurement, that I almost never use.

Just a suggestion. Some of the cheaper
models don't have the slide, but it is quite
useful on the models I have.
