My question could probably go in any one of a few sub-forums on Talkbass, so I'll just keep it simple and throw this up in the Basses sub-forum.

I've done a bit of research and have found that 4001's had, what appear to be Jazz Bass - style knobs until around 1965. At that point, it looks like Ric switch to knobs like the ones that are on 4003's now. These older knobs are on Ric's website for sale:

My question is this: Are these the same as the knobs on the volume controls of a Jazz Bass? Are they the same size?

yes. i had posted somewhere a comparison with photos but i can't find that post. there are very subtle differences but nobody will notice from farther than an inch away.

  3. I never thought of that, course, I've never owned an early 60's Ric before and doubt I ever will.

Another difference is 7ender knobs have hex set screws, Rickenbacker knobs have slotted set screws.

Interesting. When did Fender switch to hex set screws?

my 70s fender knobs have slotted set screws. spelling fender with a 7 makes it hard to find posts in searches.

the bridge saddles started using hex screws in the early 80s so maybe the knob set screws changed at that time too.

I picked that up from someone on TB; it seems more anatomically correct!

This would be even closer, still, sort of.

Hmm, so they keep moving the target, or more likely, change suppliers, now and again, perhaps.

So when you buy a set of the Rickenbacker ones, they’re all the same size....never understood the tiny tone control knob for the Jazz bass set. The Rick vintage style knobs are my favorite, i use them on a lot of my basses.
    Here’s my US G&L JB2 with them.

were they intended to be for vintage jazz basses like the American Vintage or American Original line? i think they keep track of those details for marketing/labeling etc.
