I was wondering if OSB is a good or bad wood for use in GUITAR cabinets?

My guitarist wants me to build him one, he said he wanted it to sound kind of like an orange, I know they use Birch, but on guitar cabinets does it make that much difference?

What are the other cheaper options on woods that would give good tone?

I plan to internally brace it, so I know that will make a large difference.

How thick of wood would you recommend for each type that may be suggested?

Thanks a lot in advance for all of the help!

  9. Don't screw around with OSB if you're going to take your time to build yourself. Get some nice void-free, Baltic, or other cabinet grade birch ply.

If he wants OSB, just get a Marshall and be happy with sloppy mass production. ;)

Compared to the speakers, covering (going to tolex?), and hardware, the wood is going to be the cheapest part of the cabinet. Go for a cabinet grade 1/2 inch plywood. Actually a good substitute for that is 1/2 inch Aurauco plywood from Lowes. It's around $28 for a 4x8 sheet and it's pretty nice to work with. One of the best values for speaker cabinet building. Don't waste your valuable time with OSB :spit:.

Would any old ply do or should it really be birch or the likes?

I've heard a lot of guitarists say they like pine as well.

  13. pine is good in that it resonates, and smoothes the sound out. what sound does he want?
