Other duties as a bandmember?

Discussion in 'Band Management [BG]' started by Chad Michael, Mar 12, 2003.

  1. Ok, besides being the bass player... what else do you do in your band, onstage or administrative, etc?

    Some examples:

    Playing other instruments
    Singing lead vox
    Singing b/u vox
    Playing congas
    Writing songs
    PA setup
    Booking gigs
    Writing setlists
    Breaking up fights
    Hauling gear
    Promo pack
    Supplying drugs
    Website design
    Schedule practice

    etc. etc. etc.

I'm the one who comes along with big folder full of notes on the various songs, including lyrics which are often snapped up by the singers.

    2. Archivist

I often record stuff from rehearsals and gigs on MiniDisc, some of which you can hear on the website below. You could say it's my pension plan if we ever get to the stage of being so rich and famous that fans are desperate to buy recordings of anything from the cutting room floor ;)

    3. Webmaster

I designed and maintain the band's website

Drummer moderator -- preventing Neil Peart syndrome from taking over the band.
  4. Other duties often overlooked, taken for granted:

    -Supplying duct tape for everyone
    -Supplying 9v batts for everyone
-Supplying sharpies and paper for setlists
-Untangling the black spaghetti syndrome onstage
-Acknowledging annoying drunks who want to request songs you've already played 5 minutes ago
-Acknowledging annoying drunks who want you to play songs that suck
-Acknowledging annoying drunks who ask you to play songs that don't fit the club (techno in a biker bar, etc)
-Find the drummers lost drum key

Anyone get to do all this fun stuff?
  5. Here are my "duties":

    - Playing bass
    - Rehearsal task master / drummer moderator
    - Providing extra/emergency gear (ie. guitars, cords, tuners, strings)
    - Driving the band around
    - Website design
    - Creating band image (ie. business cards, letterheads, press kit stuff)
    - Getting gigs and doing the paperwork
    - Arranging for band photographs
    - Ensuring the singer copyrights his music (and other legal matters)

-playing trumpet (solos and section) - leader has a great left hand on keys
-getting the drummer to not get too excited
-telling the singer to hurry the hell up and sing a tune (i'm not the leader)
-informing fellow bandmates that there is a hottie out in the audience (usually just howling like a bloodhound gets it done)
-telling the bandleader not to play songs that the bass player doesn't know ( ), nor has ever heard of
-making sure the horns are in tune (usually a pissed off look at the horn players fixes this after the first note of the 1st set)
-keeping the singer and keyboard player from arguing in the middle of a set
-telling people that PA isn't on yet becuase the bandleader and his fiancée are running late (probably because they are preparing to argue during a set)

    that's it for now

I'm the webmaster, mailing list guy, and burner of CDs for press kits.
  8. I pretty much do everything for our band, including:

    - print stickers
    - design/update website
    - get gigs
    - coordinate auditions
    - buy miscellaneous equipment (mic cords, etc.)
    - set up recording sessions

i had to join a cover band to take away some of my energy from this band...i feel like a friggin enabler...!

I generally tend to keep every one focused and tend to organize everything, plus being the bassist. I will get everyone to sit down and discuss what we are going to play at the show. Otherwise things would be a lot more chaotic in the band.

  11. Right now..I'm the singer/songwriter, modivator, bass player, organizer I am the band pretty much because it's not even together yet... It's just me and my fiancee
  12. Oh, forgot one...

    "Being the break music DJ"

Between sets, someone has to pick and play the CD music thru FOH. Sometimes at the end of the night, it's fun to put on something that may not fit the venue, just for the fun of listening to the sound system.

Last night, at a large local club typically visited by bikers and such, at the end of the night I'm playing

    Prince "Erotic City"
Janet Jackson "That's the way love goes"
    Next "Wifey"
    Nelly "Hot in Herre"

    The waitstaff girls loved it!!!!!:D

    I don't often enough, sadly. :bawl: :(
  17. I play bass for the band and well sometimes I do back up vocals. I also say what sounds good and doesn't. Seems weird but our own guitarist sometimes has no idea of what sound we're really looking for. So he will come up with something and both the drummer and I decide wether it sounds good with our style. I also wrote the lyrics for two of our songs

It can actually be an extreme amount of work. Sometimes I get too caught up in managing the band, that I don't put enough time into playing. Hopefully, it will soon pay off.

I'm the Soundman and Tech. The other guys buy the crap, and I'm the only one who can figure out how to set it up and use it. It sometimes can be like a Dilbert comic.

    In addition-
    I arrange alot of tunes
I tell the guitar player he's too loud
I tell the harmonica player to stop playing
I insult the bandmembers regularly to keep their egos in check
