Does an outboard preamp(pedal) work by just going straight to the power amp or does it not output enough power? Do you really have to cash out for those really expensive rack-preamps?

I paid for all my gear myself. Well, me and MasterCard.
You can do like I did, and find a used Carvin Pro Bass 15 preamp for $99. :D It'll never sound like an SVT, an IOD, or a Kern, but it works well enough for my needs.

Some of those DI pedals have enough signal to drive a power amp directly, but some don't. If you're not sure about a specific model, ask.
