    I had an accidental revelation today during rehearsal. I had set up my bass the other day and raised the pickup height. My Bearfoot Blueberry Bass OD was not as subtle as it used to be with the drive at minimum. It was frustrating me. Somehow I realized that it must have been due to the higher output from the pickups being closer to the strings. I lowered the pickups, and it was all good.

    TLDR version;
    If you wish your OD pedal had a little less gain, try lowering your pickups.
