this may be a horible question, but thats the beauty anonymity! does anyone know if the old skool 51-54 p bass pickguards line up on the new p basses. i know i would have to drill some extra holes but will it fit?
You'd have a big gaping hole where the control cavity is, and a lot of open space around the pickup from the oversized route.
I don't know, but I don't think so. I believe that while the perimeters of the basses are the same the early slab body P has a smaller diameter outside radius on the edges. Three or so years later when the body contours were added the radius of the outside edge was also increased which required a slightly smaller pickguard. Both of these were the single coil basses. I think 51-53 (larger pickguard) are the same and 54-56 (smaller pickguard) are the same. Not sure how the SC Tele Bass fits in. I also think all the current pickguards for the SC P are made to 54-56 size.
Either way, the chome cover won't cover the control cavity. You'd have to improvise something for that.
cool thanks for the info guys. i've never taken the pickguard off of a p to see what the routing looks like. thats why i love talkbass!
