P-Bass tone mods?

Discussion in 'Basses [BG]' started by GrooveMonkey, Jan 18, 2003.

  1. I did some back to back comparisons between my MIM Jazz and my MIA P-Bass yesterday and found that I prefer the Jazz tone but I prefer the P-Basses feel (neck/string thru/string tension).

Besides routing out the body for a jazz pickup what other mods would you recommend? The P-Bass in question is one of the 2002 models with the "improved electronics" and graphite rienforced neck.

I've read about the Raven labs active preamp, anyone got experience with it?

What about replaceing the pickups? what brand/model?

    I'm playing rock/alt-country/funk with it.
  2. You could take the P neck and put it on the J.

    FCCAUSA, or here
in my MIJ p i put in a SD quarter pounder, the raven labs pre, a badass II, and a detuner and the bass is sweet!
i don't find the preamp to be particularly versetile thoe, i think it does help give me more of a "p" tone though and it certainly combined with the SD gives my bass really high output, but i don't think i'tll pake you p souond like a jazz
