P Bass with flats ?

Discussion in 'Basses [BG]' started by SpitfireCWII, Jan 23, 2012.

  1. Hello!

Quick questions, and I have never played a precision bass with flats, but, does anyone know any good youtube videos that really give the full "thump" of a precision with flats ?

    Sorry for my ignorance.

It makes an excellent modern rock/punk tone.

Nothing at all wrong with rounds on a Precision. Stop it.

  10. Maybe they think the flats sound too dull.

I have flats on my J basses, plenty of punchy thump. Probably more the strings than the bass.

Rounds sound great on a P bass -- so do flats; there is no wrong answer here.

Anything out of Motown with James Jamerson on bass. That gives you a few hundred numbers to search for. And anything by Booker T & the MGs with Duck Dunn...like Green Onions and Time is Tight.

I believe all the old Black Sabbath stuff is also a p bass with flats.

    Two bits of advice:
-if you've spent your life on rounds (which most of us young whippersnappers have), you might be alarmed at the loss of 'zing' while playing alone. Wait till you hear flats in a mix to pass judgement.
-the brand makes a lot of difference. My first set of flats were Chromes and I hated them because they didn't have the mellow thump I wanted. Then I tried LaBellas and love them. Other players might be completely opposite.

I love rounds on a P bass too, especially for pick punk or hard rock. I suggest you buy two P basses so you can always have both!
