Can somebody explain the differences?
body shapes are different
neck shapes are different
P has one pup J has two

But anyway, here we go
Pick ups) P has a single split coil hum-cancelling
J has two single coil pickups, that used in conjunction are humcancelling. J pups can be solo'ed and blended for different tonal variations.
Neck size) The Jazz neck has a slimmer width than the P neck.
Body style) The J bass has an off center body, the P bass is pretty symetrical (that is if you don't count the horns).
P has one volume, one tone. J has two volume one tone.
I'm sure there are even more differences, but these are the basic and most frequently asked about differences.
