My wife found a killer old p-bass copy - says IC (very faded) on the headstock. Ibanez Corporation(?)

It's at least 20 years old, has a one-piece alder body SB, resonates like crazy. The p pup sounds pretty good actually, but i'm more a j guy (yes, for the bridge and neck).

So, where does the placement of the j vs. p pups fall (in general). Can I just re-route for the j pup and the p's hole will be covered by the pickguard? Or will i have to plug that hole up to re-route. note: i'll be having someone do the routing for me.
