Hello, I'm a student on a budget looking for an upright bass for bluegrass, rockabilly, and jazz. I put out a classified ad, and was contacted by someone with a 5-year-old Chinese Parrott bass for $650. I have read on this forum to stay away from Parrott basses. I would love to have a Kay or Engelhardt bass, but I just don't think I can afford one unless it's under $1000 (including shipping, set-up, etc). Is it worth looking at the Parrott, or should I not even bother? Thanks.

I bought an Englehardt EM1 over the net from Bob Gollihur a couple of years ago. I did have to replace the strings (Pirastro Obligato) and did some bridge work so it played easier. He is honest and fair to deal with. You should be able to get a new EM-1 for less than $1K. You could look for basses on ebay and ask questions here. Lots of good advice.
    Good Luck
