Passive 5-str. Jazz PUs?

I recently aquired a passive Fender Jazz 5-string, and I've been making it my own (getting new pickguard, maybe new tuning machines, etc.). I wanna get new pickups for it just to make it sound a little better. Any suggestions? I play all kinds of music, but my most important thing would be that I want even tones, a fairly large bottom end, and a sound that cuts thru a loud Les Paul and crappy drums. I slap sometimes, too.

BTW: I may later save up for a J-Retro preamp. Would this really change the performance of the pickups somehow in the future.
