I've been interested in this combo, but only know of a couple models. Any suggestions? Also, any opinions on how these pickup types play together? I know the TB world is highly divided on the PJ pickup combo. I'm wondering about this as a PJ alternative.
I've seen a few like that at the Marco Bass Guitars shop, including a pretty cool looking split dual jazz pickup prototype. Since he winds his own pickups he can usually make unusual combinations play nice with each other fairly well. Disclosure: I have designed and built prototype preamps for Marco, but I have no financial interest beyond that. Especially since you're interested in a passive bass.
You won't find another one quite like this. Reverend Thundergun. Passive, pure and potent. One of the biggest bass surprises I've come across. And the fretboard? Blackwood Tek...another nice surprise.
My Retrovibe Super-P was P/MM. Think only around 5 were built in white, another 5 were SB. Miniswitch changed the MM from series > parallel > single coil.
I have a bass with an MM in the normal position with a P right up next to it making it only slightly closer to the neck than a standard P. Absolutely love it. Some MM/Ps I've played have the MM moved towards the bridge which makes the MM a bit bright for me.
Sandberg do some models with this combo. I have a custom 6 string with switches for activating and deactivating pickups in various combinations. The PMM setting is one of my favourites. Plenty of grunt and power, that's for sure.
i added a MM pup to this bass ... sounded cool ... but sold it ... was a parts build ... did a hack job on hole for MM pup ... but there are pickup rings available ..!!
Someone has to say this sooner or later, so I might as well do it: If you want a P, get a P. If you want a Stingray, get a Stingray. Now get off my lawn.
