This may sound like a weird question, but can I just do a passive setup for the electronics in a bass using any pickup? Or are some pickups made to go with an active setup?

What I plan on is using Nordy Dual Stack pickups but in a passive bass that I am building (Warmoth).

All my current basses (except the Ric) are active, so I think i might try a passive 5 string.

Does this sound feasible? Or should I just get an Aguilar Pre for it?

There is no practical difference (in this context) between "old" passive pickups and "new" passive pickups. There are some pickups which are designed specifically for use with a preamp, but they are not that common, and regardless Nordstrand can make your pups however you want.
