I just picked up an Ibanez soundgear 5-string (complete impulse-buy) - It comes with passive electronics and a dual - J-pickup configuration.

Does anyone know if there are conversion kits available to make it active? there seems to be a lot of space in the 'tronics bay for extra stuff, and if there's a kit around, i'd like to convert it...

If you MUST :D go active, Seymour Duncan (Tone Circuits) and
Bartolini have preamps. Something to consider, though -
will their preamp work with the Ibanez pups?

Here's a good page from the Bart site ~

Another option that I would consider is the Aguilar OBP-1 preamp. http://www.aguilaramp.com/

I am going to have this put in my Ibanez SR506 in a few weeks.

I have played several basses with this preamp in the past 3 weeks, and have been impressed in the improvement in sound that it has made in Fenders and Corts that I have played.

I have not yet heard an Ibanez with this mod, but I am sure that it will make a big difference over the cheapo preamp that my 6 string has. The bass sounds great unplugged, but through an amp it is thin and dead sounding.
