passive vs active

    cool me stupid or whatever, but what is the difference between passive and active pickups? more importantly what differnce does it make in the difference in the guitars sound?

    Active means you have an onboard preamp usually powerd by 1 or 2 9 volt batteries. It boosts the power of the bass and gives you more tone control. That's the short story.
    Passive is just regular pickups.
