A Peavey 4x10 and 1x15 cabs and a Peavey Nitrobass Professional head have come up separately locally for $700 total. . . Pretty new to all of this, it's probably overkill for me, bit I'm curious how folks feel about this potential setup?

Nice, inexpensive amp if weight isn't a concern for you.

The Nitro is the same as the Max 450. It's 450 watts @2Ω, 300 watts @4Ω, and 170 watts @8Ω. If the 410 is 4Ω, I'd skip the 115 - it won't do much except look more intimidating. I bought a Nitro 15 years ago for $200, so it may be a tad overpriced. Heavy sucker, but it's still going strong where I practice.

I think I can actually get the head cheaper elsewhere looking around - the two cabinets are a package at $400, which I thought felt like the "deal" part of this. My total budget for a setup is $700, with zero options nearby to drive and play multiple setups (middle of the mountains in nowhere, Appalachia) - but if the cabinets are not a deal, I might just keep looking. Patience. Is. Hard.

Depends on what model of 410 and 115 cabs they are as well. However, the older Peavey stuff is pretty decent sounding and massively dependable. Weighs a pretty penny too and can usually be found for cheap on the used market. Try it if you can and if you like it then your choice. I personally would just not encourage using the 410 and 115 cab pairing together...not the best combo.

  7. You always say no to LESS power, not more. You can turn a bigger amp down, but a too-little amp pegged runs out of steam, right into a really crappy tone in a lot of cases.

Not appreciating headroom is like saying

I don't want extra money in my bank account. :D

  9. Especially if you're on a five or a six, the occasional depth-charge low D's and C's need real power and headroom to form as they should, and never a bad idea. I once spent a year having to gig with a 100-watt head as money was tight for a while, and it was the longest year of my life. I should have been charged with 1st Degree Amp Abuse, luckily Florida had no law on the books for it.

Maybe I should rephrase ... most stacks will outplay my skill level ...

Depending on what the cabs are, I’d only get 1… not both.

  17. It’s definitely going to be a loud, reliable rig, but also the kind of large setup I was using in 1990 (with a slightly different Peavey head at the time). Unless you play with guitarists that have stacks or on large soundstages, it’ll probably be a bit much.
