Ok, so I want a very grinding metal bass tone that fits in with rhythm and lead guitars. So, here are some options I would love feedback on:

    1. Sansamp + Boss ODB-3
    2. MXR M80
    3. Sansamp alone
    4. Other
Also, I was wondering if I could save some cash by using a Behringer BDI21 instead of a Sansamp since I have heard they sound identical?

Just a thought....Maybe get a Zoom B3 and try all the different "Pedals" it has to offer and then get the "Real" individual pedal. I guarantee you will have a blast with one and find some very usable patch/pedal options. Unfortunately the Zoom doesn't have any Darkglass Patches but I would recommend trying a B7k or B3k. The B3k through the Zooms Sansamp Patch is Killer. You can definitely get the Grinding Metal tone with it.

Which flavor of Sans Amp? Bumping the character knob on the VT series gets plenty o' clank.

  4. Very solid advice! I used the MXR effect, I believe its called the D.I+, a simulation of the MXR Bass DI. I used the distortion channel together with my real Sansamp di and got some great grinding bass.
However, the b3k sounds fantastic and its hard to beat "that" tone. The Zoom is a great alternative though.

As posted, I'd go this avenue. The Zoom MS60B is also an option, if you prefer smaller packages. I recall liking the MXR DI + sim and a couple of other patches. At least, u get to try more than one flavor.

Actually there are darkglass patches on the zoom b3 patch ideas thread. I posted patches that closely duplicates the darkglass distortion sounds. I've done that by using the sansamp bass driver model with the proco rat model. If you own a zoom b3, give this combination a try.

Actually I have a Pod X3, but I was thinking going more pro and more analogue rather than get another digital effects box.

  8. If that's the case, I would go for the MXR M80 for the metal grind. How often would you use the effect?
If you use a clean tone often I prefer the tone of the Sansamp. It doesn't do so well with high gain itself imo. The ODB 3 is a good starting point. However, if you're going after the "pro" tone/setup, check out the b3k or b7k!

    What about a B3k into a Behringer BDI21?

BY Bass is great, but I LOVED the tone of Boss ODB-3 (minimal gain, 100% distortion blend, treble rolled off) INTO the BDDI - clear, crisp, articulate grind! :)

How does that compare to the bare tone of the MXR M80?

Just ordered the MXR Bass DI + today, really looking forward to hearing how it sounds :)
