Pedals… as inserts! (For Recording)

Unless the pedal is capable of line level like the Eventide HE-90, i I probably won't patch an effect pedal in a mixing desk. I do not a proper studio but I have a couple 500 format lunch boxes, mostly preamps , line mixers for headphone monitoring, with some EQs and compressors. I can track 16 inputs live as well in fact that's mostly what I do, a small mobile setup that is easy to tear down and bring up. I have an Antelope Audio Zen Tour and an Audient Evo 8 ganged together. via light pipe. With the proper breakout, the zen tour supposedly can do 26 i/o. I use an X-touch as a control surface to my DAW It has 9 physical faders and is really a blessing when tracking a full band live. I do this part time and often times I am playing also. The Audient's auto gain feature is really convenient.

For some mixes, I've used a Linden Audio Pultec clone for master bus EQ. But since I got these Izotope mastering plugins and an M2 Mac, I am using it less.

I don't typically insert pedals that way, but I re-amp everything from guitars to drums to you-name-it back out through all manner of things at times to experiment--through guitar amps, pedals, synth modules. It's a blast to re-amp a clean DI'd guitar back out through pedals like delays and twiddle the knobs while the track plays---good times!

I think the old "if it sounds good, it IS good" quote applies here! The history of recorded audio reads like series of happy accidents, random experiments, and flighty inspiration as artists and engineers do non-traditional things to find a new sound. The day we stop trying to color outside the lines is the day artistry dies.
Very well said!

Also, a fair reason to give the higher end Arturia interfaces a look. They have re-amp capabilities built in. I haven’t tried them myself, but I’m getting closer to grabbing one. I’m still on the fence between the Audiofuse v2 and the Studio.
Wow, this is really cool. I’m considering one to simplify my reamping…
