People who don't give "likes"

Another TB'er gives me a snooty reply. It gets lots of likes.

you say you're pretty sure that a lot of folks recommend basses they have no experience with. why are you pretty sure of that? i've owned over 40 basses in the last 20 years, had several more on loan, several more that i had for a few days and returned, and then there are basses like the music man bongo and the epiphone EB0 that i haven't owned, but have probably played each one over 5 hours each. and i suspect that's not unusual here.

i never recommend any bass or guitar i haven't at least spent some quality time with BUT there is an exception. that is when someone says they need a particular set of specs; for example, they want a bass with a shorter scale than 30", wants to play regular metal bass strings (not rubbery ubass strings), wants a lightweight solid body bass. even if i had never played a mikro, i'd certainly suggest they try one out as they're one of the few or only basses that fits that set of requirements/preferences.

There are hundreds of types of Ibanez. Thousands of different types of P bass. Someone says get an Ibanez or a Pbass. Now you're going to tell me that person knows exactly which one? If they did, they wouldn't have said, get an Ibanez or Pbass. They would have specifically said, which model. I bring up Killed by Death. He's does that often. He names his specific model.

You missed my point or didn't read it correctly. You might have played one. But others giving "generic" direction to a newbie or someone looking for a specific instrument , part, rig and people giving it likes, as if it's a good idea is not that good is it? The likes make it look as if it's a fact. When it's actually just a truth and not a fact. If they actually owned one and not just played one for 5 minutes, they would go a little further than just blurt out Ibanez or Pbass. They would include the model. They aren't all made equally. Some models are definitely better than other.

I am specifically talking about people who just blurt out Ibanez, Sire, SX, Fender Japan, P bass and not the model. Most of these makers make mediocre equipment. Bang for the buck? These things all need to be professionally setup. Never once have I gotten the ones people recommend here without a professional setup that includes a PLEK. An instrument that needs professional setup is never good for a newbie. Newbies play differently. They need a different kind of equipment. Tone doesn't matter too much for a newbie. What matters is playability. And the cheap instruments usually don't offer that.

You might own them. You might have played them more than a few hours. Now you sure, you can suspect that people on TB have done that? If they did, why isn't the model included?

I could see that getting out of hand. Thanks. And whether or not likes matter is a good question. I think so, as I'm a member of another forum that has no such system. A lot of times I want to acknowledge that I read someone's post without writing out a response. The "like" makes that doable. It's also nice to know whether or not someone acknowledged something you may have put a lot of time into when responding. As far as whether it's actually "liked" or not is a whole nuther story.

I like lots of things here, and it's mainly that I found them very amusing, or that I appreciate and (sometimes even agree with) the sentiment. Many times its some long-winded comment that is actually EXACTLY what I myself would have said, and I then apply the like as a "ditto". I am a very dyslexic typist ( and lazy too!) so I am happy to be able to avail myself of the "Like" function

I RARELY give a "like".. mostly because so much stuff on the internet is filler to me. BUT... if something genuinely makes me laugh out loud, or i find it movingly thoughtful or compelling then Ill click it. its rare.

There are people on social media, including TB, who like everything they see. I call them likers. I like only things I really like. If you overlike it diminishes the power of liking.

I'm with you on that. And I like that you said it. But in an effort to not diminish the like button, I won't push it.
Please feel free to not like my comments in return.

Heaven forbid, the LIKE Button be diminished to the point where TB feels the need to have an AWESOME Button. :***:

I'd suggest, perhaps a BELLY Button, but everybody already has one of those.
Maybe it could be used to indicate you are expressing your opinion, as everyone seems to have one if those as well.

Yeah, I tried hiding razor blades in my 'likes' but I'm not sure if it's had any effect.

I've never seen the point in giving or receiving a 'like' so I don't use them. After reading this post up to this point, I'm not changing my thinking any time soon . I don't find it annoying or bothersome, actually it is pretty discrete, get what you want out of it.

Liking every post out of politeness is the same as a standing ovation.
The standing ovation was originally I sign of an absolute superlative- perhaps a once in a lifetime performance.
Nowadays the standing ovation has been watered down to simply mean, yeah, I was there, the cellist made it thru the show without falling off her chair.
We have to save SOMETHING as a superlative now that belly button lint can be consider 'Awesome'.

The other day I was scrolling through a thread where a lot of people were pitching in to help a member, and I was looking at the likes to see what advice people agreed with most.

It occurred to me that the OP didn't acknowledge any of the feedback with a like.

I then realized that I don't believe I ever saw that particular member "like" a post .

Liking a post is absolutely not a requirement for TB participation, but to me seems like the, "polite?" thing to do?

I started me wondering about the personality of such people, cuz I'm interested in such things. Are these the same people who never say thank you when someone holds a door for them? Are these selfish people? Completely self absorbed? Are these people who are full of pride? Are these people who simply hate the idea of "likes" on the internet?

I don't know.

Do you "like" posts.

Why or why not?

Do you have any thoughts or theories regarding people who never "like" posts?

There should be a "dislike" option. I would like that. If someone's already suggested this very thing for example, then they could "dislike" this post for stealing their idea.
