Has anyone analyzed his drumming style. I've heard so many discrepancies about him. Some of his recordings with the Beatles sound very basic. But then his performance on My Bonnie, with the Beatles as backing band, sounds more impressive.
By many accounts, he got the gig due to the fact that his mom owned a venue (bought with winnings from a horse race), he had drums and was willing to go to Hamburg. Talent didn’t factor much into it.
Absolutely. But it's still interesting he was with them during their formative years. I read his autobiography when I was a kid. It made me hate the band for a while. None of them said a word to him after the decision to fire him was made.
But I noticed he was the only one of the four who didn't get the Caesar style haircut the rest of them got in Germany. He wasn't really with them all the way.
Don't think it's possible to make much of an analysis based on how young he was, and how little we have. I think the facts showing why he was brought into the group, and that he was replaced by Ringo, says something.
There is another clip with Paul talking about him. He didn't criticize him so much as say, there was a world of difference when Ringo first played with them, filling in for Pete on a gig once.
Plus, it seems like the band was completely changing their style. Ringo had more of a Beatnik style. I can't think of another word to describe it. The kind of music they played with Pete was more of a 50s style.
I wouldn’t put much stock in what he says. He got kicked out of the band on the cusp of their success after putting in the hard work that got them there. Not exactly an unbiased source. Hell, I’d be mad too.
Remember, they were what, 20, at the time? I wouldn't expect them to have the greatest inter-personal skills.
Good point. Even with Paul McCartney there was a big difference between the way he was shown reacting to the death of John Lennon to reporters, compared to his reaction 20 years later to George Harrison death. He was better prepared.
Firing someone from your band is emotionally hard, even when the reasons are artistically sound. No wonder they let their manager do it.
I believe this was Stu Sutcliffe who had the lady-killer looks that we’re considered an asset. This may have also been Stu, who preferred and kept the slicked-back-hair look.
Ughhhhh. I got into a big argrument with a co- worker, about how great John was, but i disagreed! after watching a show about Julian & how Paul wrote Hey Jude for Julian after he noticed how sad he was when John would ignore him! And now how he treated Pete just to get to Hamburg! Not the humanitarian we were led to believe!I always felt for Julian. Especially when he was all peace & love with Yoko! and showered Sean with "Love"! I get he was young& there are other people involved, but deep down you know whats right & how to treat people!! Still pisses me off when i see Yoko's stupid face, & how she treats Julian!
And there are other tales regarding Lennon's churlish behavior. One such is that Jim Tucker, the rhythm guitarist for the Turtles who just idolized Lennon, was treated so shabbily by him on the Turtles' visit to London that he left the music business upon the band's return to the states.
That John Lennon was always a difficult, complex person with a challenging personality (to put it mildly) is hardly in dispute.
