I would assume, but don't know how to verify (there's no info in the owners manual), that the 1001RBII head is "protected" against phantom power on the on-board DI. Is this true ? Is there anyway to verify this ?
I asked at the source. This is what I got. http://www.gallien.com/smf/index.php?topic=925.0 It goes off topic about halfway through, but you should find your answer.
Thanks Vic; After reading some of the posts, and the apparent confusion around this issue, I'm surprised the manufacturers don't make this more clear to the users. For instance, on the GB Shuttle, it is clearly marked "Phantom Protected" at the jack. Seems easy enough to do.....
I have a 700rbII which I believe has the same DI as your 1001rbII. I dont see why one would ever need to use phantom power with this DI. It is low Z, and has a dial-able gain.
It's not a question of "does it need phantom power" but more of a "am I ok if phantom power gets sent to it" sort of thing. Some amps are known to kick the bucket if they receive phantom power. Maybe the sound guy leaves it on, or as is the case with some cheaper boards, not all channels have their own separate phantom power switch.
