Photo flame or real?

Discussion in 'Basses [BG]' started by THC, Jun 4, 2003.

  1. I have an Epi les paul 5 string in vintage burst. The flamed top looks very nice for the price I paid. For the money, it really does have some nice features, like body binding, and large inlays. Maybe not the greatest inlays, but hey, whattya want?
Does anyone know, does Epi use real flamed maple, or is a photo flame?

my guess is photo, the factory the bass came from i dont think would be into using real figure on a bass like that. But they sure do look nice if thats your thing, best of luck with it
  3. It could be a real flamed maple sheet (about 0.020-0.030" thick), which is much less expensive than a 3/8" thick flamed top, and looks as good. I know that some companies actually do this.
  4. Here's the "showroom" pic.
Lemme see if I can find that other nice pic.
