Pick-ups: Different sound quality for different designs?

I'm planning on building a bass.

On the subject of pick-ups, do P-styles, J-styles, soap bars, MM styles, etc. each typically offer different sound quality unique to their design? Or does it all amount to nothing other than real estate and what you want that part of the bass to look like?

I'm thinking of making an 8-string bass because I'd also like to be able to restring it with mandolin strings as an experiment. I'm just wondering if pick-ups good for bass would also be good for treble or if I'd have to run a different pick-up.

The design, windings, type or wire used, number of winds, et al, make a TREMENDOUS difference.

I encourage you to either contact pickup guru Jason Lollar through www.mimf.com or buy one of his books on pickups through www.lmii.com or another site that handles his primers on pickup construction.

Construction is only part of the equation. Placement is also a huge influence on the final result.
