Recently I switched from playing fingers style to using a pick on my bass. It just seemed to give me a better defined sound with the rest of the band. My problem is that I can't pick nearly as fast as I could play with my fingers, usually it seems most people have the problem the other way around. So I was wondering if I was supposed to be picking on the upstroke as well as the down and if its possible to play cleanly this way. It ends up coming out very messy for me but I can't figure out how else to play faster w/o killing my wrist. Any ideas?

  2. Actually, I believe that Chris Squire (and lots of other pick players) plays with upstrokes as well as downstrokes.

Just as you're supposed to alternate with your fingers, you are supposed to alternate with the pick. This is in every method book I have and is the propor way to use a pick.
