Pickup foam, does it affect the sound?

Discussion in 'Pickups & Electronics [BG]' started by gimmeagig, Feb 16, 2006.

  1. I recently changed to a shallower pickup. As a result I had to stuff a bunch of foam under the pickups to get them close enough to the strings.
My question:Could that affect the sound of the pickups in some way? Might it be better to raise the pickup cavity with a piece of wood and then use very little foam for adjustment?

It'll be fine with the foam.

As a matter of fact, I had to "sacrifice" a mouse pad for an extra bit of foam...works great.
  3. I made some wooden inserts for the pickup cavities out of paint stir sticks and the put a layer of mousepad foam over that.Perfect height and no give on the pickups and I think I even hear a little difference. That might also just be my imagination,I'm not totally sure.

Glad it worked...I know I am guilty of perceiving a sound change when I adjust something...sometimes the changes are subtle, sometimes imaginery.
