Pickup help

Discussion in 'Pickups & Electronics [BG]' started by cheesemonkey, Feb 23, 2008.

  1. Hey I'm still kinda new as a bassist and know nothing about types of pickups besides the basic single coil and double coil and thats the whole extent of my pickup knowledge. I got a bass a few months ago and am looking to replace the original pickups with some better ones. But i don't know anything... My bass is and Ibanez GSR 200 http://www.guitarcenter.com/Ibanez-GSR200-4-String-Bass-100463976-i1150632.gc

and i'm looking for some pickups right now but i was wondering if yall could help me out with my search. TY in advance

P.S. I'm pretty low on cash and I'm not looking for anything fancy just something better than the current ones

P.P.S. I was looking at these http://www.guitarcenter.com/DiMarzio-DP126-P-J-Neck---Bridge-Bass-Pickup-Set-302285-i1127660.gc one of the reveiws says i will need to file down some stuff but what do yall think?
  2. I dont know why you would have to file down anything?

Any P+J set should work fine :)

I stuck those very pickups in a cheapy bass. Very nice sounding. Not 'traditional', more modern, with quite a bit of mid going on, pretty aggressive sounding pickups.
  3. awesome thanks
  4. I just ordered a P-J set for a student from Bill Lawrence. His total with shipping was $134.50.

    The set is (1) P46 & (1) J45.

I have 2 J45s in my main bass and they are stunning. As well a buddy of mine just installed a P46, and now I want a P bass just so I can install one.

Also they are truly noisefree, even in close proximity to my computers.

You may want to research these too.

Just did a changeover on a similar bass for a friend's son (his had a blender pot which I removed in favor of a 3 way switch). I yanked out all of the electronics, and installed a Bill Lawrence J-45 & P-46, 4 new CTS 250K audio taper pots, and a new mono barrel jack (the current one I believe is stereo).

The young man loves the sound on his new bass.

Just wanted to advise of all changes here I'd recommend. I believe will enjoy the revised bass.
