I'm building an ASAT style bass and I'm going to need pups very soon.
(Build thread in the Lutier's Corner http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f57/4-5-string-asat-ish-bass-builds-1027014/ )

I tend to favor aggressive modern growl over vintage tones.

Examples of my favorite sounding basses that I own are:
Steinies (active EMG pups, no preamp)
Alembics (Alembic pups/pre, Mahogany bodies, mostly maple neck with ebony FB)
    MM w/2 band preamp
Spector (EMG P/J, Hazlab 9v pre, all maple)
Generally prefer J over P, but not opposed to PJ.

Specs on bass build are Mahogany body, maple neck, katalox (ebony-like) FB. Bolt on.

    What do you suggest?

    Hmmm, I'm noticing a trend.
Do you also recomend the G&L preamp setup?

    That's a $380 setup? Ouch.

I'd probably look for a different preamp. The G&L pre isn't really anything special but it does the job.

I'd probably go with an Aguilar or East. I have always wanted to put a filer based pre in a bass with MFD's (to see if it's kinda like a Wal)...
