I'm wanting to do a few pickup samples for the basses I build, I also wind my own pickups. I need to do this at a low cost, any ideas.

Low cost, but with a learning curve.
    Use your PC
    Pick up reaper: http://www.reaper.fm/
An active bass can usually plug straight into a pc sound card. (Not ideal, but not as bad as you'd think)
record tracks of your pickups raw with no effects and minimal EQ.

    Pickup Voxengo Boogex
    http://www.voxengo.com/product/boogex/
And set it up to record from one track to another while being processed by boogex

You can then post samples of your pickup raw - and how it sounds through various amps and cabinet combinations.
