1. Hi all,

just saw my luthier pal yesterday in Brighton, he's the guy that built my African Mahogany fretless 5, and he just finished this one for my friend and brilliant bassist Franc O'Shea, who lives in Spain, and hasn't even seen these pics yet, so here's the scoop! It's made of a gorgeous bit of pomelly (spelling?) Brazilian Mahogany, and has ebony pickup covers and an ebony finger board - lovely to play as well as lovely looking:

2. That is simply amazing, wonderful piece of luthiery! It looks gorgeous! I'm happy for your friend, and - not surprisingly - jealous for that thing!

BTW, what kind electronics/pickups does it have?
I assume it's a neck-through...
3. It's got EMG active/parametric EQ - only the bridge pickup is wired in though cos he doesn't use the front one at all! It is a neck through - very simialr to mine...

It's really a pity I'm not in Blighty or I'd be looking forward to trying out one or Mr Chapman's axes and maybe even ordering.

Forgive me if I am wrong, but from the back shot, it seems as though it is made from one piece of wood. Is this true?!?

Nice. I like the extended cut-away. What does it sound like?

Regarding urb_munki sig quote.

Zappa may have said those exact words - but the real quote it came from is "Talking about music is like dancing about architecture".

The original source of that quote is unclear as this site makes obvious.

Very sexy. Congrats.
11. The back of my African mahogany one looks like one piece but it's actually the same piece that has been quarter sawn, the neck has been basically cut down the middle, so the grain is running virtically, while the wings have been reversed, or book matched.

The Brazilian one is a little different in that Jeff used a piece that is dead on virtical for better stability on the neck, and yes both designs are influenced by Franbc O'Shea's original Tobias - but het what a few 'outlines' between bass players?

On the subject of what it sounds like - here's an MP3 of a Gary Willis tune I attempted to do mine own version of on the African mahogany fretless 5: Speak MP3 - Fretless Solo
