piezo only solid body bass

Discussion in 'Pickups & Electronics [BG]' started by dlmarquez, Sep 16, 2008.

  1. I am planning on building a solid body piezo only bass.
I am not sure but I am leaning towards either an RMC pickup or a Rick Turner pickup
I'd appreciate any thoughts or experiences if anyone has gone this route?
    Thanks

for what its worth I've spoken to a few luthiers who swear by RMCs. I haven't heard the bass pups but the acoustic guitar piezos are phenominal

Solid bridge (ala Renaissance or Rob Allen) or standard metal with individual saddles?

    Rob uses a fishman.
    Turner is sweet.

Also check out the super cool Schertler Bluestick. Its actually a tiny condenser element that sits under the bridge. John Shuker has used them in his cool Artist basses.

Still plotting on how to apply one and the new filter preamp from John East and ACG.

I've only used the RMC's and if you want to do midi they might be the way to go. The owner uses them with a V-bass but the direct piezo sound was fantastic when testing it. I have them on the top 6 strings of my Warrguitar and they trigger like nothing else.

I don't think I've ever seen a piezo only bass before. Very cool.

Is there a place with sound samples of such a beast?

Line6 Variax basses have only piezo pickups:

I actually had a magnetic passive pickup installed in one of mine (right; stock on left), just in case I was ever without batteries or the power supply.

    Resurrection!! Hallelujah!!

Would some of you who have a solid-body piezo-only (or the ability to select piezo-only) bass comment on the QUALITY of the tone? Does it really sound acoustic or just different than a mag?
