I have a Fender P bass that is MIM in 1994 or 1995. It is in the style of a telecaster bass(head and pick guard) with active p/j pu's and 2 cowpoke controls(volume/blend and treble/bass). Neck at the nut is 5/8ths.
I just don't know the real name - I've seen it refered to numerous ways.
I did a search as I remember this bass mentioned here a few times, but nada.
Kinda stupid, but would love to know it's real name.

    Thanks, Jon

That would be called a Fender Precision Bass Special. Active electronics and whatnot. It earned the nickname of cowpoke because of the pickguard.

Thanks! That's it! Mine is burst and I saw a real cool one in a pawn shop that was pale green. I replaced the pu's and had the electronics changed to passive, which sadly meant I had to lose the concentric pots. And I didn't know the cowpoke came from the pick guard.

Now I don't have to refer to the bass as a Fender P p/j thingie anymore!
